Alberta Whisky Cake (AWC) was born in July 2010 from the heart and hands of Kamla McGonigal—an ER nurse, proud Albertan, and fourth-generation prairie woman with a passion for family, food, and the unshakable spirit of the West.
From the very beginning, Kam set out to create more than just a cake. She envisioned a handcrafted dessert that represented Alberta in all its richness—solid, bold, authentic, and spirited. After years of testing and tweaking (and a little help from food scientists at Alberta Agriculture’s Product Development Centre), two signature cakes were perfected:
Chocolate (Formally; The Whisky Runner) (decadent chocolate) and Maple (Formally; The Malted Maple) (a warm, nutty maple walnut). Each infused with locally distilled Alberta rye whisky, they deliver moist, unforgettable flavor with every bite.

Supporting Local Art and Culture
At AWC, we believe in celebrating the arts. Every cake comes elegantly packaged with a lithographed ‘Artist Card’ promoting the work of a local emerging artist, one of our ‘Unbridled Spirits’. This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting local talent and fostering a community that values creativity.

A New Chapter
In May 2025, Alberta Whisky Cake is proud to relaunch under the stewardship of Kam’s sons, Jager and Ryan. With a deep respect for their mother’s legacy and a shared passion for Alberta’s culture, they aim to carry forward the tradition of crafting exceptional cakes that honor the province’s spirit.
